Tehran Curatorial Symposium #2: Post-Release

Tehran Curatorial Symposium #2
Curator as Translator, 4-6 January 2019

The question whether curatorial can operate beyond the field of art has been debated and studied with a focus on the transition from curating to curatorial in the recent years. To understand and explore new and developing abilities of curatorial and its performative capacities across different fields, this edition of Tehran Curatorial Symposium explores the notion of 'translation' as a mediating task. Bringing together curators, artists, scholars and cultural practitioners from different backgrounds, this symposium created a platform for exercising a self-reflexive process of thinking about the curatorial as a translational practice while unpacking the questions on authorial voice of translator/curator.

Emily Pethick (General Director, Rijksakademie)shared some thoughts via Skype on questions of translation in relation to the curatorial through the programme that she directed at The Showroom in London (2008-2018), where she was involved in commissioning several artists’ productions that developed different models of collaboration and exchange.

Dr. Nasser Fakouhi, (writer and translator, lecturer, University of Tehran) in his speech titled “Bubbles islands and the turbulent sea, Curation: the limits of liberty and authoritarianism” spoke about curating as a process of content selection. The cyber revolution with the possibilities of producing, transmitting and exchanging cognitive and language spheres in less than two decades created an agitated sea that, for some time, one thought that search engines and their structural and cognitive innovations could be a solution to it. Meanwhile, what has come to be called "Content Curation" and can be directed from the field of art to all other domains, if it is able to derive itself from the domination of capital and normative markets as well as violence, maybe be a new alternative.

Katayoun Arian, (Researcher, Curator and Writer) spoke on “Regarding Curatorial Activism, the Role of History and Archive” giving an insight into her curatorial practice and interests, while drew parallels between the role of history, archival practices, activism and the decolonial turn. Her views of the space in which the act of translation unfolds as an open forum for different voices, helped to trigger ‘polylogues’ about the problems and prospects of an emerging field of ‘curating otherwise’.

Inspired by a quote from the 1998 essay Junkspaceby architect and theorist Rem Koolhaas, But We Don’t Leave Pyramidsis an invitation to reconsider the human impulse to leave a permanent trace upon the world. Through a series of contemporary artworks, the project aims to re-address and collectively discuss how contemporary products such as objects, buildings, urbanism, and arts are increasingly becoming short-lived and obsolescent, and how this might affect social relations and collective and individual identities. The title intentionally begins with the conjunction ‘But’ to spark speculation upon that which may have come before; it operates as accessing point of an unexploited potential.

In conjunction with Tehran Curatorial Symposium#2: Curator as Translator, this exhibition acts as a performative curatorial device for participating artists, curators and public to explore how to situate oneself in their fields and in relation to their history. Pyramids are here proposed in connection with ideas such as ‘established’ - ‘static’ - ‘colossal’ - and ‘permanent’, to understand if it’s still in our intentions or possibilities to permanently leave any marks in our surroundings. This main interrogation will be responded not only by the presented artworks but also by analyzing the processes of production, circulation, and debates around them. The exhibition coincides with the inauguration of its venue as a local art center from its previous residential use. This transformation of urban environment is one example of an ever-increasing phenomenon that reshapes our understandings of place and time. This project explores the effects of such formal and functional changes upon local environments, human relations, as well as social and individual identities.

This work departs from a reflection on how a place (the exhibition space) can adapt to a certain event. Through a series of acts: building, un-building, and rebuilding across time, the meaning of the space has been updated. By interviewing people and documenting the collected evidences, the artist has registered the changes that have been made in this specific space throughout the years. The work consists of a set of performances that took place during the symposium. As a result the outcome of researches and conversations are presented inside one of the rooms in the same building. The title of the work is selected from an interview that the artist has conducted with the owner of the building.

The transition in approaching the space to the use of technology is the core idea of this sound installation. This piece is located inside the "summertime space" of the building, which used to operate as a cooling system in traditional Iranian architect. The noises that could be heard from outside the building suggest a kind of a narration to invite the audience to find a room wherein a loudspeaker is facing a cooling fan to echo the recorded sounds: a translation of space to sonic events, now apathetic to time.

Plant-Place, is a pre-structure for understanding the formation of new relationships and life structures within the natural world. It is presented symbolically as an incarnation of the inner hidden mystery in living beings. ‘Plant, soil and metal’ are set in an unusual condition to present notions of formation, destruction and reinvention in relationship with a structure.

A Manifesto Against Nostalgia

Twelve printed flags, performance (10’), 2018

A Manifesto Against Nostalgia, is a reflection on a long term conversation between Giulia Crispiani and Golrokh Nafisi, that is materialised in a proclamative performance and twelve handmade flags.  Composed of twelve statements this manifesto was announced in its entirety both in Farsi and English with a special accompaniment of three Karna players from the Gilan province in north of Iran. Karna, a traditional Iranian instrument, was originally used for public announcements, and later was adopted for theatre and festival performances. Following the first performative announcement of the manifesto by the artists on the opening reception of the exhibition, twelve handmade flags of each section of the manifesto have remained on the walls of the building.

Jean- Baptiste Ganne presents a reading of the entirety of Cervantès' Don Quixot in Morse code in the shape of a light installation. Visible for the most part at night, this approximately fifty-four reading turns the top of the place into a lighthouse emitting long and short signals. Western modernity's first great novel is thus read at the very speed of the life taking place around in the city of Tehran. The red flashes light up like an irregular heart beat for all the Dulcineas to be found, counting out the incomprehensible tale of dreamed adventures.

For this exhibition, Farnaz Gholami is presenting two interconnected works that have been conceived separately but are in conversation: a series of prints and three painted sheets of fabric. Both works operate by remembering what is forgotten, which is a key concept of her practice.  At the same time, they celebrate the gradual layers of history stored upon what it used be as a parking space.

This installation includes a video and several cushions. The video was taken by the artist during her travel from Dubai to Tanzania and it shows her view from the plane’s window. The installation includes an alteration that she has made to this video by zooming-in and deconstructing the image to the extent that it has changed into small element. The created pixels are translated into three dimensional sculptures in cubic shapes as cushions to be used by the public for seating places. This work explores the paradoxes of affection and the relations between things in today’s world that is extremely mediated by technology.
